Here is an overview of the Yellow River (Huang He)

The Yellow River (Huang He) is the second-longest river in China (after the Yangtze River) and the sixth-longest river system in the world, stretching approximately 5,464 km (3,395 miles). It is widely regarded as the cradle of Chinese civilization.

Key Characteristics

Why is it called the "Yellow" River?

The river gets its name from the huge amounts of fine, yellow silt (loess) it picks up as it flows through the Loess Plateau in its middle reaches. This gives the water its distinct muddy, yellow-brown color.

Course and Geography:

Source: Bayan Har Mountains in Qinghai Province.

Flow: It flows through nine provinces and autonomous regions (Qinghai, Sichuan, Gansu, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Henan, and Shandong).

Mouth: Drains into the Bohai Sea.

Cradle of Chinese Civilization:

The fertile silt deposits created ideal conditions for early agriculture. Major ancient dynasties—such as the Xia, Shang, and Zhou—originated and flourished along the Yellow River basin.
